About:
My name is Dalia Zwick, I am a PT with an advanced PhD degree in Pathokinesiology from the New York University School of Education - Physical Therapy Program. and a long-time practitioner of Iyengar Yoga.
My first physical therapy educational pursuit started in a PT school in Israel. If I can recall two points I learned, the first is that a therapist needs to look at the patient from different views/angles. You will get a clear picture of a patient's problem when you view his/her posture from the top. front, back, and side, this is applied to sitting, supine, and prone. The second point is to view the foot and ankle of the patient during the assessment and therapy. A PT needs to assess and treat with and without shoes. My Master's degree in Exercise Physiology and Ph.D. in Patho-Kinesiology education taught me how to read and perform research. What I learned from this education can be summed up by Karl Popper's quote: “Whenever a theory appears to you as the only possible one, take this as a sign that you have neither understood the theory nor the problem which it was intended to solve.” and “I may be wrong, and you may be right, and by an effort, we may get nearer to the truth.” Many of my teachers in the educational setting were physical therapists. In the last twenty years, I included Iyengar Yoga teachers to teach me to become a better PT. I was blessed to go to India a few times to meet BKS Iyengar and his daughter Gitta. I often go to Israel to study with an Iyengar Yoga teacher who conducts Medical Classes. What I learned from this education is that in order to understand the body you need to be a practitioner of yoga or other movement practice. Parallel to my yoga education, I was fortunate to learn from great British physiotherapists who are changing the neurodevelopmental approach as a form of therapy to an approach with a focus on posture care.
A new hobby of drawing added quite a few teachers to my education. I learned from them how to use visual thinking and how to illustrate the human body. I will share my knowledge and how it applies to Posture and Autism in this presentation.
